A 'Day in the Life' of one of our Software Developers

I’m Faki Tayran Ariduru, a Software Developer at Metricell. I’ve been here for almost a year and a half, working on systems that turn complex network data into insights customers can actually use.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Most days are a mix of building new features and making sure they hold up in real conditions. I work closely with QA to keep the quality bar high before anything goes live.
Alongside feature work, I spend time improving performance and data quality across the platform. And when something needs attention in a live customer environment, I help investigate and fix it so things stay stable and reliable.

What are some of the key responsibilities in your role?

I develop new functionality, maintain existing services and continuously improve reliability—fixing issues, reducing edge cases and refining how the platform behaves over time.

What skills or qualities do you think are most important in your job?

Problem-solving and attention to detail are essential, but long-term thinking matters just as much. Code that works today is only half the job—code that’s still clear and maintainable a year from now is what keeps teams moving. Communication and collaboration are also a big part of doing things properly, especially across teams.

What impact does your work have on the public?

The products we build help network operators understand and improve their networks. That translates into stronger, more reliable connectivity—something people rely on daily for work, communication, and travel, often without noticing the engineering behind it.

Is there a part of your role that people might be surprised to learn about?

People are often surprised by how much thinking goes into “small” changes. Even minor updates need careful planning, so the system stays clean, scalable and understandable for whoever works on it next.

Can you give an example of a project where you felt your work made a real difference?

A project that really stood out for me was building the In‑Building Analysis layers. We took telecom data and mapped it at building level across the UK, linking location-based information directly to individual buildings. We then visualised this on a map—colour‑coding buildings so problem areas are easy to spot. Users can drill into details and generate reports quickly. Seeing people get faster, clearer insights from it made the work feel genuinely useful, not just “another feature.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy building things end‑to‑end and understanding how the pieces fit together. Planning the work, connecting the components and then seeing the result land in the product is the most satisfying part for me.

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

Building new capabilities, solving real problems and watching small improvements compound over time.

Have you had any memorable moments during your time here?

The internal events have been the most memorable—Company Days, World Food Day and the Christmas Party especially. They’re a great way to share a bit of my culture and connect with colleagues outside the usual day‑to‑day work.

What’s the team dynamic like where you work?

Collaborative and supportive. There’s a shared habit of solving problems properly and improving things step by step, rather than rushing quick fixes.

How do you collaborate with others across the business?

I work closely with QA, Product Managers and other developers to make sure we build the right things—and deliver them on time without compromising quality.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

On rare sunny days, I like walking through the green forests—this country can be surprisingly beautiful on those days. Most other days, I’m indoors either playing the ukulele or getting lost in video games.

How do you balance work and personal life?

I try to keep clear boundaries and make time for things that reset my brain. Having interests outside tech helps me come back more focused and energised.

What are you most looking forward to in your role this year?

Continuing to build new features and gaining more experience with large‑scale, real‑world systems that run in production every day.

If you could share your favourite thing about your job, what would it be?

It’s challenging and rewarding at the same time and there’s always something new to learn.
