Smartphone Stats Reveal an Exciting Future for App Owners

Are you reading this on your phone? Statistically speaking, at least one in two of you are. According to Statistica, in 2019, 51.51% of web traffic worldwide originates from mobile devices.

It’s not surprising, considering how technology has revolutionised our lives. The iPhone was released to the public in June 2007, followed by Android handsets in September 2008. Twelve years on, 82.2% of UK adults use a smartphone and by 2020, the number of smartphone users is projected to reach 2.87 billion worldwide. That’s a lot of people expecting - and relying on - good quality network coverage to support their favourite apps.

In addition to this, 194 billion mobile phone apps were downloaded in 2019, and this is expected to rise exponentially in the years to come. In the future, app usage might even replace mobile websites completely. Desktops will continue to be used for business and office work, but handsets will increasingly dominate every other aspect of consumer technology.

It used to be the case that some households would have one desktop computer – now nearly 1 in 3 people have a small computer in their pocket. Before, our daily struggle with dial-up internet included not being able to use the phone-line at the same time. Now, connectivity issues can be more complex, ranging from site issues, to disruptive landscapes (including challenging geography and developing skylines), and outdated device versions.

Our capabilities present a unique opportunity to crowdsource network experience information directly from applications as well as providing app owners with a new avenue to drive revenue from their digital portfolio.

Metricell’s crowdsourcing program, CrowdScore, integrates quickly with any application to collect network performance measurements from the application users’ devices. Our solution is simple to install, safe to use, invisible to users, and GDPR compliant. Are you an app developer looking for new ways to monetise your app? Find out more.
